Google Business Profile optimization

Google Business Profile optimization for contractors

Your profile is the first thing a Dallas homeowner sees on the map. We set up categories, services, service areas, photos and posts so Google knows exactly what you do and where, and the calls come to you.

The problem

Most contractor profiles are half finished.

Google business profile optimization sounds like a one-time chore. Fill in the form, upload a logo, done. That’s why so many DFW plumbers, roofers and HVAC companies sit at position six on the map while a competitor with fewer years in business takes the three-pack.

The profile is how Google decides relevance, the first of its three local ranking signals. If your primary category is “Contractor” instead of “Roofing contractor,” Google has to guess. If you never listed “water heater installation” as a service, you’re asking to rank for a job you never told Google you do. If your service area is a 60-mile circle drawn around Dallas, it tells Google nothing useful.

Then there’s the stuff that quietly costs you calls: a business name padded with keywords that invites a suspension, hours that say closed on Saturday when you run emergency calls, photos from 2019, and reviews nobody answered.

None of it is hard on its own. The problem is that nobody owns it. The office manager set it up, the last agency touched it once, and Google keeps changing what the profile can do. GBP optimization is ongoing maintenance, and someone has to own it.

Our Google Business Profile optimization process.

  1. Audit and grid scan

We check every field against Google’s guidelines and map your rankings on a grid across your Dallas service area, next to the three profiles beating you.

  2. Fix the foundation

Categories, services, description, hours, service areas and business name cleaned up in one pass, with nothing that risks a suspension.

  3. Feed it every week

New job photos, posts, review requests after each job and a reply to every review, so the profile keeps sending fresh signals.

  4. Report on calls

Each month you see calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile, tied back to booked jobs where we can track them.

How to optimize a Google Business Profile

What actually moves a profile in the Dallas map pack.

If you want to know how to optimize a Google Business Profile yourself, start with the fields that tell Google what you do. Those carry far more weight than the extras.

Primary category first

Google lets you pick one primary category and several secondary ones. The primary carries the most weight. A company that does both AC repair and furnace work in Richardson usually wants “HVAC contractor” as primary, with “Air conditioning repair service” and “Furnace repair service” as secondary. Look at who holds the three-pack for your main search and copy what works. Our guide to Google Business Profile categories walks through it trade by trade.

Services and service areas

List every service you’d want a call for, in the words a homeowner types: “slab leak repair,” not “subsurface plumbing solutions.” For service areas, name the cities and zip codes you actually drive to, like Plano, Frisco, Garland or Mesquite. Service areas tell homeowners where you’ll go. They won’t make you rank in Fort Worth if your shop is in Rowlett, because distance still comes from your verified location.

Photos, posts and questions

Upload real photos from real jobs: the truck in a driveway, the finished panel, the crew on a roof in Lake Highlands. Post an update every week or two. When homeowners keep asking the same question, answer it in your services, your description and on your website, because that’s where Google’s AI answers pull from.

Management, not a one-time setup

Google business profile management is the part most owners skip. Anyone can suggest an edit to your listing, and Google sometimes accepts it without asking you. We check the profile every week, fix bad edits, flag spam listings to Google and answer every review. GBP work is one part of our local SEO service, alongside reviews, citations and local links.

What we won’t do

  • Add “Best Dallas Plumber” to your business name. It breaks Google’s rules and can get the profile suspended.
  • Rent a virtual office or mailbox to fake a closer address.
  • Buy reviews or gate requests so only happy customers get asked.

Digital Ducats has ranked 715,000+ local keywords on page one for home service businesses, and the profile is where that work starts. Curious about budget? See what local SEO costs for contractors, or contact us for a free profile review.

GBP optimization questions

How long does GBP optimization take to work?

Fixing a wrong primary category or missing services can show up in the map pack within a few weeks, sometimes days. Steady gains from reviews, photos and posts build over two to three months. How fast depends on your trade and how strong the three profiles above you are in your part of Dallas.

Can I optimize my Google Business Profile myself?

Yes. Pick the right categories, list every service, set real service areas, add job photos and ask every customer for a review. Most owners get the setup right and then stop. The ongoing part, weekly checks, review replies and fixing edits Google accepts without asking, is where an agency earns its fee.

Should I show my address or hide it?

If customers don’t come to your location, Google’s rules say to hide the address and list service areas instead. That’s true for most plumbers, roofers and HVAC companies. Hiding the address doesn’t hurt rankings. Google still uses your verified location to judge distance.

What does Google Business Profile management cost?

It depends on how many locations you run, how much cleanup the profile needs and whether reviews and citations are in scope. You get a quote once we’ve run the audit on a discovery call. Our local SEO cost guide explains what drives the number.
