SEO timelines

How long before SEO makes your phone ring?

How long does SEO take? It depends which part of Google you mean. Local Service Ads and the Maps 3-pack can move in weeks. Organic rankings and AI answers compound over months. Here’s what to expect from each, and what speeds it up.

Short answer Organic SEO takes months: Google Search Central says most businesses need four months to a year to see the benefit. Local channels move faster. Local Service Ads can run as soon as Google verifies you, and Digital Ducats clients typically see first map pack gains in 60 to 90 days.

How long does SEO take? First, which results are you counting?

When a homeowner in Richardson searches “water heater repair,” Google shows up to four different things: Local Service Ads at the very top, the Maps 3-pack (the three businesses Google shows on the map), the organic blue links below that, and more and more often an AI-written answer. Each one runs on its own rules and its own clock.

That’s why two agencies can give you two honest answers that sound nothing alike. One says “weeks,” the other says “a year.” They’re talking about different parts of the page. Most agencies quote the slow number for everything, which is how you end up paying for a year of “trust the process” while the phone stays quiet.

Here’s how the timeline breaks down by channel.

Local Service Ads: as fast as verification

Local Service Ads aren’t SEO in the strict sense. You pay per lead, not per click, and there’s no ranking to earn before you show up. The wait is verification: Google checks your business license, insurance and the background checks it requires for your trade. Once you pass and the ads are switched on, you can take calls the same week.

The tradeoff is that every lead costs money, every time. That’s fine. LSA is the channel that pays the bills while the slower channels below it build. If you need calls this month, it’s the place to start.

The map pack: weeks to a few months

Most Digital Ducats clients see their first map pack gains in 60 to 90 days. That window covers fixing the Google Business Profile, getting reviews flowing after every job, cleaning up listings across the web and filling the gaps in your service pages. Google has to notice each change, and reviews only pile up as fast as you finish jobs.

Where you start matters a lot here. A garage door company in a suburb with three real competitors can move faster than an HVAC company fighting for central Dallas against shops with thousands of reviews. We go deeper on the map side in how long it takes to rank on Google Maps.

Organic SEO: months, and it compounds

Organic rankings are the slow channel, and Google says so itself. In its “Do you need an SEO?” guide, Google Search Central says that in most cases an SEO will need four months to a year to help a business first make improvements and then see a potential benefit. Its SEO starter guide adds that some changes show up on Google in hours while others take several months.

Why so slow? Google has to find each new or changed page, crawl it, decide whether it belongs in the index and then work out where it ranks against pages that have been there for years. Links from other sites, which tell Google you’re worth trusting, also take time to be found and counted.

The upside is what happens after. A service page that ranks for “slab leak repair Dallas” keeps bringing calls next month and next year without a charge per lead. Each page that ranks makes the next one easier, because Google now trusts your site on that topic. That’s the compounding part, and it’s why organic is worth starting early even when LSA is carrying the load.

AI answers: built on the same foundation

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI “who’s a good roofer in Plano,” the answer leans on what the web already says about local businesses: your website, your reviews, directory listings, and articles that mention you. There’s no switch to flip. You get named once enough consistent information about you exists, and that builds over months, mostly from the same work that drives organic rankings.

When results show up in days

Sometimes the fastest win isn’t adding anything. It’s removing what was holding you back.

Digital Ducats worked with a plumber whose site had several pages competing for the same searches, a problem called keyword cannibalization. Google couldn’t tell which page to rank, so it ranked none of them well. After the competing pages were consolidated, the plumber’s average map ranking improved by roughly 70% in six days, with no new reviews or links.

Fast results almost always come from structural fixes: a wrong primary category, a page Google can’t index, pages fighting each other. New content and new links are the slow part. A good audit finds the fast fixes first.

What makes your SEO timeline longer or shorter

Every “how long does local SEO take” answer comes down to the same handful of things:

  • Competition. Roofing in hail season or AC repair in July means more businesses fighting for the same three map spots.
  • Your starting point. A profile with 200 reviews and a broken category can jump quickly once it’s fixed. A brand-new business with no reviews and no site has more ground to cover.
  • Service area size. Ranking near your shop is easier than ranking 25 miles away in Fort Worth or McKinney. Distance is a real ranking factor you can’t fake.
  • Website history. An older site with clean pages ranks faster than a new domain or one carrying old problems like thin city pages.
  • Consistency. Reviews that come in every week beat a burst of 30 followed by six months of silence.

A realistic first year, month by month

  1. Month one. Audit, fix the structural problems, get Local Service Ads verified and live if they fit your trade.
  2. Months two and three. Profile, review and citation work starts showing in the map pack. LSA keeps calls steady.
  3. Months four to twelve. New service and city pages start ranking organically. Each one adds calls that don’t cost per lead, so your average cost per lead falls.

That’s the whole case for running every channel at once instead of one after another. You’re not waiting a year for anything to work.

How to tell it’s working before rankings arrive

You don’t have to wait for page one to know if your SEO is on track. Watch these in the first few months: more calls and direction requests in your Google Business Profile, pages showing up in Google Search Console, and tracked calls tied to the right source. If none of those move after three months, ask your agency why, in plain words. See how we report on our SEO services page, or contact us to get a read on your own timeline.

SEO timeline questions

Why does SEO take so long?

Google has to find, crawl and index each page, then decide where it ranks against pages that have been around for years. Links and reviews that build trust also take time to collect and be counted. Google Search Central says most businesses need four months to a year to see the benefit of organic SEO.

Can SEO work in a week?

Sometimes, when the problem is structural. Digital Ducats saw a plumber’s average map ranking improve by roughly 70% in six days after consolidating pages that were competing with each other. New content and links don’t work that fast. If an agency promises page one in a week with no audit, walk away.

How long does local SEO take compared to organic SEO?

Local SEO is usually faster. Most Digital Ducats clients see first map pack gains in 60 to 90 days, while organic rankings typically build over four months to a year. Local Service Ads are faster still, since they can run as soon as Google verifies your business.

Should I quit SEO if nothing happens in three months?

Not automatically, but ask hard questions. By month three you should see early signs: more profile calls, pages indexed, map positions moving in at least part of your service area. If your agency can’t show any of that or explain why in plain words, the work may be the problem, not the timeline.
